Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 114
Episode one 14 of the marketing life podcast. This is Taylor, Timothy, your host. And today guys we’re gonna be talking about online marketing and we’re going to be comparing it to sales. Sometimes there is a disconnect with this multiple businesses out there, but we are going to be comparing all my marketing versus sales.
My Story About Learning Online Marketing
Guys, before we dive into this episode, I want to tell you guys a little story about what I learned about sales when I was, I hadn’t been like 24. We’re going back to the marketing agency days and basically I was kind of at that point where I was transitioning out of the video stage and the agency and wanted to say, Hey, like I want to learn all my marketing. And the my mentor kind of had like convinced me that I needed to do sales.
For about a week I was like doing cold emails. I was going and knocking on businesses, doors, trying to make sales happen for him and for online marketing. Like that’s what he needed. He needed a sales guy. And about after a week I went to him and I was like, you know, well like I want to learn about online marketing. I, I don’t want to do sales.
“Do you wanna make a lot of money?… You need to learn how to sell.”
He looked at me and he actually handed me a bank account statement that he had. He looked at me and he said, do you want to make a lot of money? And on this statement had $300,000 on it. I was like, yeah, I want to make a lot of money. He’s like, well then you need to learn how to sell. And at the time, my young age 24 I was like, well I don’t want to, I don’t want to sell, I want to learn all my marketing. And basically he looked at me, he’s like, okay, whatever you can, I’ll teach you this stuff. But just saying, you know, I haven’t touched that money for a really long time and if you want to make a lot of money you are going to have to learn how to sell.
We kind of gone a little little baffle and he’s like, I was like, well, you don’t have to make a lot of money to be happy and dah, dah, dah. Come to find out like now where I’m at today, the lesson that he taught me there was very valuable.
What I Learned
How I look at it is like money doesn’t buy happiness. That’s what I told him. Money doesn’t buy happiness, but the truth is money relieves stress and money makes opportunity and money makes freedom. Um, that’s how I look at it right now. That was the lesson that he was trying to teach me. And now looking back I say, I understand now I’m so, I’m very grateful for that lesson, you know, because what I learned from this entire thing is that you do have to sell and everything that you do to be successful.
Book Recommendation: “Sale or Be Sold”
Recently I was, I read a book called seller be sold. And the thing is like in work you’re constantly selling. If you have a boss, you are always selling him up on, on the you are eligible and should be working and that he should be paying you what you’re paying him, like what you’re paying him and what he’s paying you. There’s, it’s this constant lifecycle of selling people in your relationships.
You’re constantly selling your partner that you’re worthwhile and that and that you should be in the relationship and so on and so forth. Everything you guys are doing is selling. That’s something I learned. Like the truth is, if you want to be successful in life, you have to sell. That’s what he tried to teach me there and very grateful for that lesson that he taught me. Um, didn’t understand that lesson then, but I do understand it now.
Marketing v.s. Sales
And so let’s talk a little bit though about on my marketing and sells. A lot of times there’s a huge disconnect, um, with cells and all my marketing and in my opinion it is the same thing. Um, the goal of the cell is to make money. The goal of all my marketing is to make money. It’s to, you’re just selling a different way.
On my marketing, you’re selling people through digital assets and you’re driving them to landing pages or prompting them to call the sells guy. But before then you actually had to sell them to get to that point. And so in my opinion, there is absolutely no difference. And I, what I challenge you guys to do is to get out of that mindset that is different because it’s not, you know, the reason why you run brand awareness campaigns is to warm people up, to sell them, to get into your funnel.
That is the whole process. And then on, once they fill out their information, then yeah, it’s the sales department to actually close them if they’re, if they’re following up and things like that. But that’s why I challenge you guys to do is get out of that mindset of all my marketing is different from cells because you are having to sell them.
Learn Sales For Your Agency
Think about that when you guys are writing your headlines, when you’re creating offers and things like that, the wording and verbiage you use is selling them. And if you feel like you’re not good at cells, get better at it, read books about it, and do things like that because that’s the truth.
That will make you successful if, if you’re trying to run your ad agency, the thing is you’re going to have to become an expert in, in advertising, and then you’re going to have to become an expert in selling the guy that your business is worth paying for and that he should be paying you X amount of dollars to be working with him. So if you’re true entrepreneur, if you’re a true entrepreneur and you want to be super successful and make a lot of money, you’re going to have to be good at cells. Okay?
