Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 123

Episode 123 of the marketing life podcast is terror. Timothy, your host today, guys from me talking about how Google is cracking down a little bit on some of the ads that we’re doing. So potentially we could see this affect some industries, maybe not. So what’s, I always say more time guys and dive right in.

Google Changes to Ad Policy

So a few weeks ago I actually got an email from Google basically stating that they’re making some changes to their ad policies. And unfortunately I couldn’t find it, but I started Googling around and trying to figure out, you know, where the articles were of other people that have published it. So I went and got some information from them. Um, but basically all in all, they’re cracking down a little bit.

What are the Policy Changes?

So basically an overall summary is that some of their ads that we are creating now, if they’re altered or zoomed in body parts, mugshots, real life disasters, um, basically you, aren’t going to be able to run ads with those types of things. That’s also including this could potentially be very harmful for the health and wellness space, but, um, before and after shot.

Visual Ads: Before and Afters

We know that Facebook doesn’t allow before and afters. Now Google doesn’t allow them, um, to show before and afters. And basically if they’re assuming that it’s unrealistic changes with the human body, then potentially, you know, they might shut them down. So for all we know that could just, they could be saying this right now with this is the actual ad visual.

If you’re doing like display ads or YouTube ads, potentially you won’t, you can’t run them, but they could even dive deeper at some point like Facebook does and say, you can’t have before and afters it all. So in the health and wellness space, this could be very, very challenging without before and after. So that’s just something that helps sell from my experience, but I’m sure there’s some marketers out there that are still crushing it without, before and afters.

Negative Life Events

But like I said, they’re cracking down. So then this next little thing in my opinion is pretty, this isn’t like too big or too drastic. But like they’re saying negative life events, such as death illness, arrest bankruptcy to induce negative emotions with the aim of pressuring of your, to take a fast action.

Google Doesn’t Want Bad User Experience

So the thing is, is like Google doesn’t want a bad user experience. So if you’re like manipulating people on that way of like saying, Hey, if you don’t click on this, you’re going to die then. Yeah. Like they’re going to shut those down and that’s just going to make their user experience better.

User Experience with Manipulative Ads

So that was the other thing they said. And then the next one is ads that pressure the user to purchase, subscribe to, or stop consuming a product or service in order to avoid harm ads, which use depictions of severe distress pain, fear, shock to promote or a product or service.

So again, um, they’re kind of pushing, you know, manipulation in my opinion. So this is going to create a better user user experience for their users. And that’s the goal. That’s what you have to realize as an advertiser is like, well, why won’t Facebook, let us do this, or why won’t Google, let us do this? And the thing is, yes, they like our money. They, they liked that we spend money on their, on their platform and ads and stuff.

But at the end of the day, they protect the user because if they don’t have a user on the platform. Then they’re in trouble and then we won’t have anybody to advertise to as well. So just realize that these are some changes that Google’s making. They’re cracking down a little bit on their ad and their ad policies. So be aware of that.
