Introduction to the Marketing Lyfe Podcast Ep. 2

Welcome back to the Marketing Lyfe podcast, episode number two! Today on the podcast is going to be me again. I’m going to be interviewing myself to give you guys a little rundown on how this podcast is going to happen and how it’s gonna go down. So let’s dive in.

Taylor Timothy’s Path to Online Marketing Expertise

So guys, to get started off. The first question I’m going to ask when I’m interviewing people is what is your backstory? I’m so my backstory. I grew up in Brigham City, Utah and growing up, I played baseball through high school so I’m, I’m very competitive. My personality is very competitive and I just love playing baseball and playing video games. I just wanted to win all the time and then I ended up getting into and deciding to do a service mission and I served in Brazil for two years and so yeah, I speak Portuguese. Tu fala Portuguese. So, any Brazilians out there, what’s up?

So basically that’s what I did until I was 22, went into college, had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. And then, I got into video and I started doing video creating video shooting videos and I just kinda kept running into the problem of nobody could see the content I was creating. Yeah, he could post it and people were like:  “Dude, your videos are so sick, you do such a good job”, but nobody could see them. And that’s kind of how I got into the online marketing space. And that’s where I, how I’m here today.

What is Taylor Timothy an Expert in?

So the next question I’ll ask is what are you an expert in? So in response to that question, I am an expert in lead generation. So when I first bring on a client, the first thing I do is, I dive into their website and I decide if their website is functioning properly. Does it have the clear messages, is it google friendly? Does Google like, is a mobile friendly? Does it have the proper lead magnets out there? So I go in and I optimize these and figure out the best offers and to figure out how to get people into their email sequence.

The next step I’ll go into is their Facebook ads or YouTube ads and they’re in their google paid ads and decide how we can best leverage that. Once we find the right platform for that client, then we’ll start to scale it and go from there.  But the one thing that I’m a true believer of is you need to be hitting every single channel out there. You need to be doing Facebook ads, Instagram ads, YouTube ads, Google ads. You need to be doing seo, you need to be doing your email campaigns. You need to be hitting every channel out there because your audience is in every single one of those channels, whether you like to believe it or not. So I definitely recommend doing all of these things when you’re running and setting up campaigns. So this is what I’m an expert in lead generation for, for my clients.

So the next question I’ll ask is how did you become an expert? So for me personally, like I said, I was doing video and at the time in college, I needed an internship and realized I needed to get into online marketing. So I started googling, I call the different online marketing companies in Saint George. It is a teeny town and I found out about this guy named Jace Vernon that runs a company called “Y Draw” and a company called “Marketing High”. And so I found out about this. I went and knocked on his door and I said, dude, I want to work for you. I want to do an internship and when do I start? And he looked at me and said, come back in a couple of weeks and we’ll chat. So a few weeks later I came back and same response, come back in a few weeks and we’ll chat. So the next day I came back with a document from the school saying I needed an internship and I, he was backing out and I walked up to his door. As he was backing out in his car, I handed him the paper. I said, “Jace, are you going to sign this or not?” He ended up signing the paper and I came back the next day and that’s how I got into online marketing.

Generating Success with Social Media Ads Takes Time to get Results

So the next question I’m going to ask is: what was a marketing campaign that failed? So for me, a marketing campaign that stands out to me that failed was a guy came to us that had a company that created cabin air filters for your car, washable cabin air filters. And he came to us and said, “hey, I want you guys to build out my new website. I want you guys to work with my campaigns and let’s get some sales”. We said, “sounds good, let’s do it”. So the first two weeks I spent building out his website, you know, websites take time to like get them optimized and to really get them up and functioning. And then I turn on his Facebook ads. After, I finished the website and the Facebook ads, we’re running about a week and a half and he came back and he’s like, “these aren’t working”. And he fired us and I was like, are you kidding me? You just fired us after that much time. Like you didn’t even give it time.

So the reality of like Facebook advertising, YouTube advertising, all sorts of advertising, you have to give it time to get the results. Yes, I do believe you can hit home runs. You know, people have had successful campaigns where they’ve turned them on and they started working immediately. But from my experience, generally speaking, you have to give your ads time, you have to learn what your audience is doing and how the audience is engaging with your content. So that’s really what I learned from it is that when selling clients or when working with clients really educate them on this stuff time. It’s not one of those things. They like Lebron James didn’t pick up the basketball and start making three pointers and dunking it the first time he touched the ball. The reality of it is he had to practice and he had to work hard at it to get them to get them running. So that’s kind of like online marketing. You have to give it time practice. The next thing you know you’re hitting home runs.

Working with Clients to Learn About Their Market Opportunity and Advertising Success Path

So the next question I’m going to ask is what was your first online marketing success? So the first online marketing success that I had was the company came to us and they needed to fill a conference down in Brazil, so I was actually pumped about this because it’s like, oh, I speak Portuguese like I lived there, this could be dope.

And so they came to us and they said, look, here’s 10 grand. We got 10 days, we need to fill the conference. And we were like, holy smokes, here we go, let’s do this. So we spend about a grand a day on Facebook to fill these conferences. And long story short, what happened is we ended up filling the first conference and then they’re like, oh my gosh. And they ended up having to book the second day because we filled two conferences and they were blown away at what had happened.

Why was this Marketing Campaign Successful?

So the next question too, this is like, why was this successful? Like why did this work? There’s a couple things that I think the reason why this campaign was successful. The first thing was our ads were very creative and engaging. The second thing was we had three people working on this campaign. I feel like a lot of effort was put into it between all three of us and we put our heart and souls into making this campaign happen and we were constantly texting each other back and forth throughout the day, off out of off hours and everything. We were all in on making this campaign work and that’s some of the reason why I feel like things were successful.

The next question was what was your biggest takeaway? So my biggest takeaway from this particular campaign was working as a team. A lot of times we’ll help you build and make successful campaigns and working as a team, collaborating, getting feedback on your ads, your copy, and your images is definitely going to help you in the long run and making your campaigns a little bit more successful.

Taylor Timothy’s Grand Slam Marketing Success

So what was your Grand Slam for success? So I’d say my Grand Slam for success was with a company in Phoenix, Arizona. They do carpet cleaning. So when they came us originally they said we’re converting around $50 or $60 a conversion and we need to cut these down to like $30.

So I dove in there and started looking around and seeing what we needed to do and I realized first we need to rebuild their website. Their sites speeds were slow, nothing was tracking, right. So, I spent the first month just rebuilding their website and getting it functioning properly. So we got in there and we cut cost per conversion and a little. They’re like optimizing and doing things there. So then the next thing we’re like, “‘Kay we need to cut this again”. So I flew down there and created some Facebook videos for them. So what we did is we spill household items on the carpet and then what I did is I filmed them cleaning it. So they’re cleaning process is incredible. They could remove wine, they could remove Gatorade. The only thing they couldn’t remove was a sharpie. So what we did with this video is we use it for remarketing. So once the site, once someone came to their site, we showed them this video and we used a review for the top text.

We use a captivating headline and then we use this video to remarket to people that have come to the site and immediately we started converting around $25 per conversion just on Facebook alone. So then from there we’re like, “‘Kay, we need to cut this. We want to cut it again”. So we left Facebook alone. We dove over into Google Adwords and said, “hey, how can we cut cost per conversion here? We’re around 40 to $80 right now, like something’s going on”.

So what we did is we dove in there and started split testing landing pages and we started converting our landing pages around 14% So anybody that came to the site for 10% later, they were converting and we realized that we weren’t tracking the phone calls properly. So we used a software out there, um, and basically started tracking the phone calls that were going in. And after that we realized that we were converting after all said and done, we push their conversion down to $14 a conversion. So it was a huge success. It was successful because we kept trying and we kept testing and pushing and pushing and we never gave up. I would say that’s one of the big things with online marketing and being successful is not giving up and continuing to to fight through it and push it.

Another reason why I was successful as the product was amazing. They have a great product, amazing reviews and raving fans, so that’s another reason why I was successful. My biggest takeaway from it all was you need an amazing website. You need to be split testing, you need to be doing Facebook ads, you need to be doing paid advertising on Google. Everything kind of feeds each other and so you need to always be trying different channels. You always need to be testing and I’d say that’s my biggest takeaway from my Glenn Grand Slam for marketing.

Marketing Success Takes Testing and Patience

So what was your Grand Slam for success? Say My Grand Slam for success was with a company and Phoenix, Arizona. They do carpet cleaning. So when they came to us originally they said we’re converting around $50 or $60 a conversion and we need to cut these down to like $30.

So I spent the first month just rebuilding their website and getting it functioning properly. So we got in there and we cut cost per conversion a little. They’re like optimizing and doing things there. So then the next thing we’re like, hey we need to cut this again.

Finding Success in Online Marketing: “Continue to have patience, fight, and progress.”

So I flew down there and created some Facebook videos for them. So what we did is we spill household items on the carpet and then what I did is I filmed him cleaning it. So they’re cleaning process is incredible. They could remove wine, they could remove Gatorade. The only thing they could remove was a sharpie. Another reason why I was successful as the product was amazing. They have a great product, amazing reviews and raving fans. So that’s another reason why I was successful.

To Be A Successful Business, You Need An Amazing Website

My biggest takeaway from it all was you need an amazing website. You need to be split testing, you need to be doing Facebook ads, you need to be doing paid advertising on Google. Everything kind of feeds each other. And so you need to always be trying different channels. You always need to be testing. And I’d say that’s my biggest takeaway from my Grand Slam for marketing.

If you had to give every online company in the world advice, what would it be and why? So the thing that if I had to give advice to any company out there in the world, I would say number one, you need an amazing website that works. It needs to be google friendly, it needs to be mobile friendly, it needs to be tracking everything properly, and that’s definitely one thing that I’d tell them. I would also tell them that they need to be hitting every channel out there. They need to be doing paid advertising on Google. They need to be doing Facebook ads. They needed to be doing Instagram ads, they need to be blogging, they need to be having a drip sequence. They need to be sending out emails all the time. They need to have amazing customer service. They need to be doing everything possible and not putting their eggs all in one basket.

The reason why is all these platforms are constantly changing. The algorithm on Facebook is always changing the algorithm on. Google’s always changing, so you can’t bank your entire business on one platform. You need to be hitting every single channel out there. The reason why you need an amazing website is to me like your website is your business card. It represents your business. If it sucks, then people are gonna. Think your business sucks as well, so amazing website. You need to be constantly engaging with your audiences and that’s the advice that I would give to an online company.

To finish off the podcast, we will do what is called a speed round. So what do you do for fun? I go to the Jazz. I get season tickets every year. I’m a huge Jazz fan. I really love watching them play. I go mountain biking, a law here in Utah and loved going outside to Moab, Zions, St George. Anything outside. Sign me up. I’m in for doing something fun. My favorite marketing book I would have to say is “Dotcom Secrets”. It’s one of those books that really explains how online marketing works and has a lot of good strategies out there that you can try and apply to your business. So I’d recommend that people check that out.

Marketing Calls for the Best in Business; Embrace the Challenge

Um, favorite thing about online marketing is that it is very challenging. Marketing. Online marketing is one of those things that it really pushes me and I love when it gets real hard and then, all of a sudden, you find successes and that’s probably been my favorite thing about online marketing.

A favorite marketing podcast. I’ll definitely have to say it’s this one. Just kidding. A favorite marketing podcast is Perpetual Traffic with Keith Krance, Molly Pittman, and Ralph Burns. Um, they talk a lot about Facebook marketing strategies and different things and what’s going on in the Facebook world. So I really recommend checking their podcast out. If you’re learning about Facebook ads and trying to get Facebook ads working for your business, definitely check them out and if they’re listening, what’s up?

Next thing, favorite online marketing tool? I’d have to say the Divi theme. I’m a huge fan of the Divi Theme on WordPress. It makes building sites really fast, really easy, and it makes it so your tracking is really easy. I just highly recommend using it. It I’ve had huge. It’s all I use for my websites and I’m just one of those guys. It’s like, I don’t want a nice car that doesn’t work. I want a decent car that works all the time. Every time I turn the key, I want that sucker to start and that’s been my experience with the Divi theme. So love that. Love Google, love Facebook, all those free tools out there on Google. I highly recommend using them. They are very on top of things and highly recommend them.

What Advice Would You Give To Every Marketer In The World?

Um, what advice would I give to every marketer in the world? Don’t quit. Keep trying and you will have your successes. You will have your failures, but keep pushing, keep split testing, keep innovating, trying to learn new things, listen to podcasts, watch you tube videos, self educate and continue learning because these things are constantly changing. They’re never going to be able to teach this in college in my opinion, because things are changing way too fast all the time. So continue to self educate and keep pushing and getting over those humps.

What have I learned about marketing outside of marketing? So you know, in general I can compare, I can compare it to life in general. Life’s not always easy lives hard too. And I would say that’s, that’s one of the things that’s helped me just in life in general, is just to keep fighting, keep pushing, and keep trying.
